How to buy a train ticket in the Irish rail system

Railway transport companies in Ireland are scrambling to attract customers as the railways struggle to compete with global rail firms.

Railway transport company MTN and its subsidiary NMT are looking to build a $15 billion, 40,000-kilometre railway in Co Wicklow that would connect the southern city of Londonderry to Cork.MTN has said the route could eventually run through Dublin, but has said it does not expect to begin operations until 2024.

A spokeswoman for NMT said the company was “considering all options” as to whether the project could go ahead.MTNL has said that in the meantime, it will “continue to operate a network of modern trains” and is working with other rail operators to “modernise and enhance” the railway system.MTL has said a new line to Cork would help reduce the cost of travel for customers.
