Australia has more rail fares than any other country in the world.
And you won’t find a higher-cost option in the country, which is why many travellers would rather travel on an express train than a private car.
But how do you find the cheapest train fares in the most congested city in the continent?
We looked at how the average Australian railway fares compared to the average fare across the world for a range of trains, including those which have the lowest fares and most services.
And we found that train fares tend to be higher than car fares in a few key places.
For example, the average Sydney train fare is around $5 more per person than it would be in the US, which means you could get an extra $150 in Sydney if you wanted to travel from Sydney to New York City in just over three hours.
